Frederick police have charged a mother with attempted murder after she allegedly tied a noose around her 9-month-old son's neck, according to the Frederick News-Post.
Blanca Noehmi Juarez, 26, was arrested June 5 on charges of attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, second-degree child abuse and reckless endangerment.
It all began about 4:30 a.m. April 16, when an officer was called to do a welfare check. Juarez reportedly told the officer she had tied a noose around the infant's neck after a fight with her boyfriend, who is also the boy's father.
Police sent Juarez to Frederick Memorial Hospital to be evaluated. Meantime, medical officials examined the infant, finding a red mark consistent with a rope being placed around the child's neck, according to court documents obtained by the News-Post.
According to police, Juarez changed her story at the hospital, telling a Child Protective Services official she only put the rope near the child's neck, not around it.
CPS took custody of the infant and opened an investigation.
Police interviewed Juarez again on April 24, at which time she said she had misinterpreted the officers original question about the rope. According to the News-Post, she denied placing the rope around the child's neck, and said she had lied to the officers originally, but did not give a reason why.
Detectives reportedly interviewed the father May 22. He told them he had awoken to find his son coughing, with the noose around his neck.
Juarez is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on July 1. She was being held Wednesday on $150,000 bail.
