A subcontractor for the Virginia Department of Transportation died while powerwashing in an elevator shaft above the Benjamin Harrison Bridge southeast of Richmond.

Virginia State Police identified the victim as 30-year-old Joao Celso Palamar of Newark, New Jersey.

Sgt. Tom Cunningham says Palamar died while working Thursday afternoon. Details weren't available.

The bridge carries state Route 106/156 across the James River between Charles City and Prince George counties. Authorities closed the span for several hours after Palamar's death and reopened it Thursday night.
