A new report says the amount of out-of-state trash flowing into Virginia dropped in 2007 by about 2 percent and the amount of in-state garbage declined by 9 percent.
The annual state waste management report says out-of-state municipal waste transported to Virginia landfills and incinerators equals about half of the amount generated in the state.
But it says Virginia creates more than three times the amount of construction and demolition debris that comes in from other states.
Out-of-state waste has declined to 7.1 million tons from a high of 7.8 million tons in 2004. But the Department of Environmental Quality says the state saw 4.8 million tons of trucked-in trash in 2001.
Maryland, New York, Washington, D.C., North Carolina and New Jersey are the top five places exporting trash to Virginia.
