Police say serious crime in Fairfax County (web|news) increased by more than 6 percent last year, although the number of homicides declined.
Statistics indicate the total number of crimes in 2007 was 18,156, up from 17,108 in 2006. Last year's increase was largely due to an increase of nearly 1,200 larcenies.

Rapes in Fairfax County increased from 73 to 95, while the number of homicides fell from 19 to 13. Burglaries fell by nearly 11 percent.

The statistics are based on seven crimes: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft. In 2006, the total number of crimes was the lowest recorded in Fairfax police statistics dating to 1970.
