District Mayor Adrian Fenty says the city will spend about $60 million this summer to make major repairs at about 60 schools.

Since the mayor took over the city's troubled school system a year ago, D.C. has spent about $500 million making long-delayed repairs at more than 100 buildings.

This summer's repairs will include major renovations of bathrooms and classrooms, as well as modern elevators to assist handicapped students and staff. Work also will begin on upgrades to several school athletic fields.

Fenty says his goal is to start the next school year with no outstanding maintenance requests.
