It was a tragic Father's Day for one Capitol Heights family. John Crawford, a 28-year-old father of two, was fatally shot in his home early Sunday morning by an intruder, police said.
Prince George's County Officer Henry Tippett said Crawford, his fiance and two children returned to their home in the 400 block of Zelma St., near the Addison Road Metro station, about 1:15 a.m. Sunday. Crawford confronted an intruder, who was apparently trying to burglarize the home, according to investigators.
Police said the intruder shot and killed Crawford, who was pronounced dead on the scene. Crawford's fiance and two kids were unharmed, police said.
"I heard about five gunshots, the mother screaming, yelling," said one neighbor, who didn't want to be identified. "Gun shots, multiple gun shots... Yelling, 'No, no no,' and screaming."
The same neighbor says she spotted a person behaving suspiciously not long before the shooting.
"You could tell something wasn't right cause who walks up and down the street at 1 o'clock if you don't live there?"
"It's a shame, period," said neighbor Gary Sanders. "Just the loss of life being a family guy, having kids."
"It's just scary, that's all," added neighbor Ramona Crowder. "You think about protecting yourself, the need to be a little more alert."
Police put out a lookout for an adult black male who was wearing all black and a black ski mask. Investigators say there could have been more than one intruder. They are also looking for a white Dodge Avenger, which police believe the suspect used to flee the scene.
