D.C. officials expect fewer problems this year paying the thousands of young people working in the District's summer jobs program.
Last year, wages were paid with electronic benefit transfer cards. Workers had to pay ATM fees whenever they made a withdrawal. Some workers were temporarily unable to access their wages.
This year, the city is using a Visa debit card system that involves fewer fees and can be used wherever Visa cards are accepted. City officials warn, however, that some ATM transactions will still be subject to a fee.
More than 19,000 people between ages 14 and 21 will be working in the program.
