Some Virginia commuters are going to get a stern message starting Tuesday, because they could be towed away since they can no longer park in certain Prince William County (web|news) lots.
With gas prices topping $4 a gallon, slugging is a commuting craze that's catching on even more. "I save a lot," slugger Christine Fuller said, while another commuter said they save about $20 a day.
In Prince William County, 10,000 commuter parking spaces aren't enough. The amount of people using bus service is up 12% and the transportation authority is expanding bus service just to keep up. "With gas $4 a gallon, you bet I save," Jennifer Shafer from Dumfries said.
At Potomac Mills Mall, commuters had started to take over the parking lot, but now they are limited to 950 spots. Anyone who crosses a blue boundary line gets towed. "We have an obligation to our retail customers," businesswoman Christine Green said.
Sluggers said the mall has a duty to them. "They need to be helping us. This is not the solution," Javier Castro said. "There's not that many shoppers in the middle of the day," Jennifer Shafer from Dumfries said.
Potomac Mills isn't alone. Springfield Plaza enforces slugging restriction with two trucks too, ultimately forcing creative commuters to dream up even more ways to save a buck and the environment.
