Eventually, the widening of Interstate 95 will ease traffic, but for now, it's causing problems.
The start of the widening of Interstate 95 caused a traffic back up from Springfield to Woodbridge Tuesday morning. The source of the congestion was six miles of construction. Over three years, a fourth lane will be added to the north and south bound lanes of 95. But the Virginia Department of Transportation admits progress will cause drivers pain.
"We're out of there at 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon and we start at 8:30 a.m. in the morning," said VDOT Official Steve Titunik.
With a mix of local commuters and interstate traffic, the work zone will create tie-ups throughout the day.
"This is a rush hours day, probably lasting about eight to ten hours," said Officer Jesse Bowman with Fairfax County (web|news) Police.
There are signs warning drivers of the delays. Commuters like Catherine Ugarte chose a different route. "We go the back way when we go to Woodbridge. We go the back roads just because of the traffic."
