The U.S. Park Police say a man  robbed and attempted to sexually assault a woman along the C&O Canal Path.

Investigators say the victim was walking along 29th Street, near the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, when a man approched her. The attacker -- who did not display a weapon -- forced the woman to a secluded area behind the Four Seasons Hotel on U.S. park property, authorities said.

The assailant took the victim's purse and then attempted to sexually assault her, police said. The victim screamed and fought off the attacker, but he fled with her purse.

She was not seriously injured.

The assailant was described as black, 5'10", 20-30 years old, with a medium complexion. He was wearing a black T-shirt, dark shorts and sneakers, police said.

Friday, police posted fliers in an attempt to help catch the suspect as well as alert the community.

"It's definitely concerning that someone is attacking in such a seemingly safe neighborhood of the city," said one resident.

U.S. Park Police Sergeant Rob Lachance said, "Probably the best thing she did to save herself was screaming, which obviously attracts attention from people around, and closes the window of opportunity for any of these suspects to do harm."

People out in Georgetown aren't surprised by the attack, but say they will be more cautious.

"I just don't think women should be traveling alone at night, regardless of what the neighborhood is like," said resident Dia Parrish. "It can happen anywhere, anytime."

"I think it's relatively safe. The police presence is pretty good, but I think anybody walking around by themselves-- it could definitely happen," said resident Lee Carter.

Park Police ask anyone with information to call Detective Ludwick at 202-610-8753. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the crime tip line at 202-610-8737, referencing USPP CASE # 08-22309.
