Construction has begun on the Intercounty Connector in Montgomery County (web|news), sparking overnight traffic delays.

The first stage of the $2.4 billion ICC involved double-lane closures and intermittent 15-minute total closures of Shady Grove Road south of Tupelo Drive/Epsilon Drive as crews begin constructing a bridge.

Construction is planned from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Wednesday. It will resume again June 29-July 2; July 8-10; and July 13-17.

Double-lane closures are scheduled between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday nights until July 17. Intermittent 15-minute roadway closures are also expected.

The highway will eventually run through Montgomery and northern Prince George's counties.
