The second phase of Metropolitan Police Department (web|news) 's 'All Hands on Deck' program is slated to start today.
The first phase of the police blitz started on May 2 until May 4. MPD said they made 480 arrests, seized $5,395 in money and $12,450 worth of drugs. In addition, 12 firearms and two vehicles were taken as well.
Chief Lanier said it will continue to have an impact. "Increased police visibility has helped our communities feel safer," said Chief Lanier. "We continue to hear positive feedback from residents who welcome more police in their neighborhoods."
All available MPD personnel will be on patrol throughout D.C., including foot patrol, homicide detectives following up with victims and recruits passing out crime-related info. The police said the program is their effort to improve public safety by having more interaction with the public.
There is a total of five 'All Hands on Deck' planned for 2008. In 2005, all five 'AHOD's' netted more than 2,400 arrests, police said.
