Montgomery County (web|news) Police are investigating the mysterious death of a three-year-old girl in Potomac, Maryland, Thursday night.
It all started when a mother and her two young children were a having van problems along River Road.
The little girl, Jasmine Afolabi,3, was with her mother and 4-year-old old brother, when their vehicle broke down. They began to walk down River Road, until a passing motorist gave them a ride to a nearby gas station.
And now the 3-year-old girl is dead and a family struggles to understand what happened.
"I want to know what happened to my daughter. I want to know what happened to my daughter," said Rene Afolabi, the girl's father.
A gas station attendant, Sherrif Ngie remembers watching the children eat ice cream, as their mother walked away.
"That concerned me because according to the lady who brought them here, she thought she was going to abandon them here," said Ngie.
When the mother eventually returned to the gas station, another driver gave them a ride back to their car. But soon after, they were seen, again, walking down River Road.
This time, though, the 3-year-old girl was bleeding badly. A third driver raced them to a nearby fire station. The three were taken immediately to the hospital, where the little girl was pronounced dead.
Police have talked to the mother, but so far, have little knowledge as to what happened or who is responsible.
"Our detectives are open to all possibilities. We know it is possible this young person was struck by a car," said Montgomery County Police Officer Lucille Bauer.
The mother is currently hospitalized, and nobody seems to know why they were walking down River Road or how the little girl was killed.
Montgomery County police do not believe that any of the motorists who aided the woman were involved in the incident, but would appreciate any information from anyone who saw the woman or has any helpful information.
