Residents are cleaning up after a swift-moving storm moving tore through the region Monday night, toppling trees and causing damage in isolated areas.
ABC 7 Meteorologist Alex Liggitt says the most severe damage happened in "very isolated areas." The WeatherBug network recorded gusting winds of only about 50 mph in the Alexandria (web|news) section of Fairfax County (web|news), where many trees fell.
"It came out of nowhere. And it was just a wall of water," said Belle Haven resident Jean Logan. "I haven't seen rain like that since I was in a rainforest in Tanzania."
Fairfax County Fire officials said the storms brought down trees in the Belle Haven neighborhood, just south of I-495. A huge tree fell in one part of the neighborhood, smashing three cars.
Nita Olmi heard a crash and turned to see a massive tree toppled.
"Oh my God! That's all I could say. What else?" asked Belle Haven resident Nita Olmi. "We're lucky that nobody's hurt."
Trees knocked down wires at the intersection of Fort Hunt Road and Belle Haven Road. Dominion Power reported about 300 customers without service in northern Virginia by Tuesday afternoon. Other residents complained they had no phone service.
Verizon contractors were working to clear trees, but one their chainsaws became stuck.
"The wind was moving very fast. The rain was horizontal and tree limbs were flying by the windows," storm victim Eddie Miller said. "One of our neighbors moved his car from here over to another neighbors house earlier in the day and a tree fell on his car and probably totaled it."
Firefighters said most of the damage was contained to a couple of neighborhoods and no one was injured.
