WASHINGTON - Powerful thunderstorms left over a host of problems throughout the District Wednesday night.

On 7th Street and G Street Northeast, neighbors watched as a tree came down on top of a car with two men inside. A neighbor captured the rescue effort on home video.

"We were in the car waiting for the rain to stop because the rain was so heavy. The next thing we know the windshield cracked and the tree came down on top of the car," said Tim Walker, one of the men inside.

Rescue teams worked for 20 minutes to free the men, who escaped unharmed.

Meanwhile, lightning, strong rains and winds pounded other areas of the District. On 6th and K Street, lightning struck a tree that came crashing down on a brand new playground that was scheduled to open to the community Thursday.

Work crews throughout the District spent the night cleaning up the mess left by the winds and rain.
