WASHINGTON - Many questions remain unanswered in a Northeast D.C. shooting that left a man dead and prompted a neighborhood to explode in anger.
Residents in the Trinidad neighborhood are gathering at a church for a meeting Tuesday night. Police and residents in the area are coming to put a lid on a combustive situation.
Outrage, frustration and anger rocked the neighborhood Monday night. Now all that's left is grief and a quest for answers. "I have a whole lot of questions," said Travis Joyner, the victim's brother. "I'm not going to ask -- not going to ask these questions now."
On Monday night, four U.S. Park Police officers moved in when an informant reportedly made a call about a man with a gun. The plainclothes officers are part of the multi-agency Safe Streets Task Force.
Trey Joyner apparently got of a car and then something occurred which prompted the officers to fire repeatedly. Witnesses say they heard at least seven gunshots.
Investigators say they recovered a gun at the scene, but some who say they witnessed the shooting are adamant Joyner never brandished a gun or threatened the officers.
"He never pointed the gun at him," said a witness.
On Tuesday, his family joined residents in the community in questioning the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
"I'm not angry -- what I'm worried about is that nobody can tell me what is going on. Nobody told me why they [were] pursuing my son," said Walter Lee Joyner, the victim's father.
Joyner was a familiar face in Trinidad where residents say his crew staked out a stretch of Holbrook Street near where he was shot. His friends say Joyner had done time and vowed never to go back to jail.
His family now wonders whether they will ever really know what happened. "I [have] nothing to say right now sir. Thank you cause I don't know what is going on and stuff," said Brenda Joyner, the victim's mother.
"I hope and pray someone will give me some answers," added Travis Joyner.
The Metropolitan Police Department
