UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Prince George's County emergency crews have rescued 32 kayakers who became stranded on the Patuxent River.
A county fire department spokesman says everyone was brought to land safely by early Friday afternoon. There were initial reports of kayakers missing, but officials say everyone is accounted for. There were no injuries.
Rescue boats, dive teams and a helicopters were call in to assist with the rescue effort.
Jim Bridges, with the Patuxent River Keepers, says 32 people believed to be participating in a four-day weekend camp event at the Patuxent River Park launched Kayaks into the river, but their efforts were quickly thwarted by the river, which is swollen after several days of heavy rain. Some of the kayakers flipped over and were getting caught in submerged tree limbs.
"It looked good going in but it rose -- but the water rose about a foot-and-a-half while were were putting in," said Bridges.
"Someone who was a very seasoned kayaker, he capsized and then he got separated from his boat and that was very scary," added Lynn Cherry, a kayaker in the group.
Annapolis resident Jacqueline Kelsey says she's done the trip with the group Patuxent Riverkeeper four times before but never with this outcome.
"I got caught on a tree and the boat flipped over so I was in the water and I got stuck in the boat," said Kelsey.
Kayakers credited group leaders for quickly taking action -- ordering people to bail out on the banks of the river when possible and to stand by for help. The group is made up of both experienced and novice kayakers from across the area, including some teenagers from Baltimore.
The plan for the group now is to check out the river Saturday and head back in if it seems safe.
