(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins announced Monday they will designate reliever Luis Ayala for assignment and select the contract of right-hander Bobby Keppel from Triple-A Rochester prior to Tuesday's game at Milwaukee.
Ayala agreed on a one-year contract with Minnesota in the offseason after spending parts of 2008 with both Washington and the Mets. The right-hander appeared in 28 games for the Twins this season, posting a 1-2 record and a 4.18 earned run average while walking eight and recording 21 strikeouts.
A veteran of five-plus seasons, Ayala has a 29-36 record, 18 saves and 3.50 ERA in 367 career appearances with the Twins, Mets and Expos/Nationals organization.
Keppel last appeared in the majors during the 2007 campaign where he made four relief appearances for Colorado. He is 0-4 in 12 career games (six starts) for Kansas City and the Rockies.
Signed by the Twins as a free agent in December of 2008, Keppel went 3-3 in 23 appearances (three starts) for Rochester this season. He had one save with 13 walks and 28 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings.
