Can buying wind power really help you save cash? That's the pitch one local utility company is making.
Unlike the rest of the houses on Wintergreen Terrace in Rockville, Cheryl Kagan's home is powered purely by wind and there's no windmill in the backyard.
"It was the right thing to do. We're trying to go green," said Kagan.
Kagan learned of Rockville clean energy company Clean Currents while doing an environmentally friendly renovation of her kitchen. She switched over and as it turns out, she's actually saving money.
"This was the easiest and the cheapest of everything we've done," she said.
Maryland residents have been receiving mailers from one of at least two local companies selling wind power. In some cases, it's more than 10 percent cheaper than Pepco's average price per Kilowatt hour and locked in for up to two years.
"The overall power prices have gone cheaper which allows us to offer wind power cheaper," said Leah Gibbons, a Washington Gas Energy Services spokesperson.
Kagan is also saving a little extra thanks to Montgomery County
(web | news) which chips in half sent per-kilowatt hour for anyone using 50 percent or more clean energy.
"We hope the clean energy rewards program is a catalyst to get to people to continue to adopt green lifestyles," said Susan Kirby, the Clean Energy Rewards Program coordinator.
"We know that we are supporting wind power and doing our bit to make the environment a little cleaner," added Kagan.
Just last year, the United States passed Germany for the most wind power capacity. But you won't see much around Rockville. So where does the wind come from? Some of it is produced regionally in Western Maryland, Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The rest is produced across the country.
