Dozens took the plunge in Rockville Wednesday to raise $15,000 in funds for a memorial in honor of Mattie Stepanek.
The King Farm Swim Team swam for two hours and 5,000 laps to raise money for a memorial statue to go in the new 26-acre city park named after the 13-year-old boy who won the hearts of millions with his spunk, spirit and best selling books of poetry.
Stepanek was made famous after being featured on Oprah and became a face of muscular dystrophy. During his funeral, three years ago, his hero, President Jimmy Carter delivered his eulogy.
The new park in Rockville, will feature sport facilities, a playground and a dog park.
