Loudoun Supervisors Challenge VDOT Transportation Plan
posted 11:50 am Thu July 05, 2007 - Leesburg, VA
An agreement that could raise up to $400 million a year for transportation improvements in northern Virginia is facing a legal challenge from Loudoun County officials.
The Board of Supervisors contends the plan violates the state constitution by allowing an appointed panel of officials that cannot be held accountable at election time to levy taxes and impose fees on residents.
Critics fear that with no public accountability, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority could play favorites in making decisions about where to spend the money.
A legal challenge could delay projects such as a new interchange on the Fairfax County Parkway, the widening of the Prince William Parkway and $11 million worth of road improvements in Loudoun.
