posted 5:23 pm Fri July 06, 2007 - Frederick, Md.
The Frederick County Health Department is reporting it has found elevated levels of dangerous chemicals in the groundwater near a Frederick gas station.
The Maryland Department of the Environment found MTBE at levels of 2,500 parts per billion near the Frederick Gas Mart in the 7,700 block of Sunday's Lane.
The state must take action when the level of methyl tertiary-butyl ether reaches 20 parts per billion.
Benzene, a known carcinogen, was also found at 600 parts per billion, which exceeds the state's action level of five parts per billion.
The health department has mailed letters to 25 property owners within a half mile radius of the station, as is required by state law.
