Northern Virginia Sprawl Could Threaten Small Airfield
posted 2:53 pm Sun July 08, 2007 - LEESBURG, Va.
Pilots and owners of small planes are worried about a new housing development planned on the edge of Leesburg Executive Airport.
They fear that once people move in, they will start complaining about the noise and force Loudoun County officials to shut the airport down.
Aviation experts say the construction of new housing is one of the leading threats to small airports across the country.
The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors will decide this month whether to give final approval for the 500-acre complex of houses, shops and offices just south of Leesburg. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has lobbied against the development, which is called Crosstrail.
