Tai Shan Celebrates His Second Birthday
posted 5:33 pm Mon July 09, 2007 - Washington
The National Zoo's new panda cub is barely a cub anymore. Tai Shan celebrated his second birthday Monday by enjoying a custom-made frozen treat in his outdoor yard while Zoo visitors looked on and cheered.
The treat, prepared by National Zoo nutritionists, featured bamboo leaves, carrots, pears, beets and apples suspended in ice.
Since his birth on July 9, 2005, tens of millions of people have visited Tai Shan, both in person at the Zoo's Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat and virtually on the Zoo's Web site.
He and his parents can be seen on exhibit daily at Smithsonian's National Zoo.
Under the deal signed with China to host the giant pandas, the zoo agreed to give any offspring back to China upon its second birthday. But the zoo recently reached an agreement to keep Tai Shan for another two years.
Zoo officials recently announced Tai Shan's Mother, Mei Xiang, is not pregnant. The Panda experienced a psuedopregnancy after being artificially inseminated.
