Metro Gives Away Locks to Prevent Bike Thefts
posted 10:45 am Tue July 17, 2007 - FALLS CHURCH, Va.
A rise in bicycle thefts at Metro stations is prompting the transit agency to help customers take preventive measures.
Metro will be giving away free locks Tuesday to customers who ride their bikes to four stations. They include Franconia-Springfield, Braddock Road, East Falls Church and West Hyattsville.
Metro Transit Police officers will be giving away a limited number of padlocks. They will show people the best way to secure a bicycle to the bike racks at Metro stations.
Police say 81 bikes were stolen at Metro stations in the first six months of the year. That's compared with 46 thefts for the same time last year.
Nearly half of the bicycle thefts were reported last month.
