Culpeper Boy Seriously Burned in Campfire Incident
posted 5:21 pm Fri July 20, 2007 - Culpeper, Va.
A 14-year-old boy remains hospitalized after he was burned by an exploding spray paint can at a campfire Saturday.
Dioranni "Dee" Waters was celebrating his AAU basketball team's championship game victory in a friend's backyard at the time.
Waters and three teammates were around a campfire when someone threw a can of spray paint into the fire. It exploded, burning Waters over 30-percent of his body. It's unclear who threw the paint into the fire.
Waters was taken to Culpeper Regional Hospital, then flown to Children's Hospital in Washington. On Monday, he was airlifted to Shriner's Children's Hospital in Boston, which specializes in juvenile burn victims.
Doctors put the boy on a respirator and feeding tube; he is reportedly expected to remain in that state for several weeks. Waters will also have to undergo skin grafts and other therapy.
