Metro Approves $25 Million Overhaul of Fare System
posted 8:52 am Fri July 27, 2007 - Washington
Metro's fare card machines will get an overhaul over the next four years to make it easier to buy the rechargeable SmarTrip cards.
Metro's board of directors has approved the $25 million project to upgrade 550 fare card machines.
Currently, the plastic SmarTrip cards are only sold at rail stations with parking lots, Metro sales offices or on the Internet.
Once the machines are upgraded, passengers will be able to purchase the cards at any station.
The cards currently cost $5.
Metro also has plans to start selling less expensive paper SmarTrip cards.
