Friends of slain Prince George's County police Corporal Richard Findley are remembering a man who gave his life to his community, and so much more.

Whether it was his ten years on the Prince George's County police force, 20 years as a volunteer firefighter in Beltsville, or his volunteer work, he was always one to help.

"It's very hard. He's just a good guy and it's a shame," said Mary Kucharski of Christmas in April.

Findley volunteered at the organization, which helps people repair and remodel. The elderly woman Findley had been helping was so broken up by his death, she could not appear on camera.

"She just started crying," explained Kucharski. "She said she hasn't been able to get it out of her mind. She wanted to write a letter to someone. She didn't know who to write the letter to. She loved him; she told me that."

The headquarters of the Prince George's County Fraternal Order of Police is draped in black bunting, the flags fly at half-staff in remembrance of Findley.

"Everybody's doing what they can to move forward, trying to do what they can to make sense of something that makes no sense," said Vince Canales, the FOP president.

Findley's fellow officers say they worry that Findley's ultimate sacrifice will be overshadowed by the investigation into who killed his accused killer.

"We want to see that Richard's story gets told as well," said Canales. "He was a great man, I can't say that enough. He made the ultimate sacrifice."

Community members are invited to attend the two viewings for Cpl. Findley on Wednesday at the Borgwardt Funeral Home in Beltsville, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral home is located at 4400 Powder Mill Road.

The funeral will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Beltsville. The address is 11007 Montgomery Road.

Additional parking for the viewing and the funeral service will be at the Beltsville Elementary School, 4300 Wicomico Avenue, Beltsville, Maryland. Shuttle service will be available from the school.
