A perimeter around the World Bank headquarters in Northwest remains locked down because of a suspicious package.

The bank says in a statement that a man approached a security officer at the 18th Street entrance at about 12:45 p.m. with a suspicious package. The man claimed he had a bomb, according to police. Police were notified, and the man was taken into custody.

Bomb squad technicians determined the package did not contain explosives. A D.C. Fire and EMS hazardous materials crew was called to the scene because a container inside the package was leaking, a fire official said.

The bank says its employees are being asked to stay put until the incident is resolved.
