A lawyer for the rural community of Walkersville is denying that town officials discriminated against a Muslim group by denying their request to build a mosque and hold national conventions on land zoned for agricultural use.
Town attorney Danny O'Connor says the town will vigorously defend itself against a federal lawsuit filed by the landowner.
The complaint in U.S. District Court in Baltimore stems from the local zoning board's rejection of a request by the Silver Spring-based Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
The allegations come not from the Muslims, but from the David Moxley family, which had planned to sell its 224-acre farm to the religious group for about $6 million.
The town's mayor, Ralph Whitmore, referred questions to the town attorney.
