Prince William County (web|news) police have charged a driver with DUI after a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a passenger Sunday night in Woodbridge.
Devon Marshall Thomas, 19, was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a license. Police believe Thomas lost control of his 2005 Mitsubishi Galant in the 12700 block of Old Bridge Lane in Woodbridge about 10 p.m. Sunday night.
Investigators believe Thomas came around a curve too fast, crossed the double yellow line, over-corrected and crashed into a tree.
"So far it appears alcohol, speed, lack of use of seat belts and, most likely, inexperience are the factors in this accident," said Officer Erika Hernandez of Prince William County Police.
The back seat passenger, identified as Mohammad Q. Abdur-Rehman, 19, was flown to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to investigators. From the wreckage, it appears the area where he was sitting in the car took the brunt of the impact.
"It was very sickening," said Tina Bennett, who lives just few from where the car crash and saw the aftermath. "It was terrible and sad and you just feel bad for all them, really."
The front seat passenger, a 19-year-old man from Woodbridge, sustained minor injuries.
Thomas is being held without bond pending an August court date.
