A mother and father are accused of giving their young children drugs after the three-year-old and sixteen-month-old were taken to a hospital in Louisa and tested positive for cocaine.
Drug distribution charges against the father, 25-year-old Derrick Christmas will be heard by the Louisa County grand jury on July 14th. He is also charged with two counts of felony child neglect, one felony count of distribution of cocaine and one felony count for the distribution of marijuana.
"A significant amount of cocaine as well as marijuana that the court found probable cause to believe that was consistent with distribution of both of those items," deputy commonwealth's attorney Rust McGuire said.
Authorities had gone to the house of Christmas' girlfriend, 26-year-old Brenda Quarles, looking for drugs.
An aunt had taken two of the couple's sons to the hospital. Authorities said the two children appeared to be intoxicated. They both tested positive for cocaine and a prescription drug used in sleeping pills and tranquilizers. The parents were then charged with child endangerment.
"This is very rare that we'll actually see children this age that actually have this in their system without some type of accidental ingestion," Major Donald Lowe, Louisa County Sheriff's Department said. When asked if the children could have accidentally ingested the drugs, Lowe said, "Not with the cocaine."
Residents of the small rural town can't believe this allegedly happened in their community. "It's a bad situation," one man said. While a parent said, "I wouldn't dare, wouldn't let anybody do anything like that to my kids."
Christmas' mother said he didn't do it. "I know he's innocent."
All of the boys, including a third son, a newborn who wasn't involved with the drug incident, are doing well. All three were placed in custody with protective services. Both parents are due back in court on July 28th for the reckless endangerment charges.
