Drivers passing by a Montgomery County (web|news) gas station are being lured in by prices 10 cents cheaper than the competitors, only to find out there's a catch.
"As a matter of fact, we almost had an accident trying to pull around to get in here," Carol Kissell said.
The sign outside the Washingtonian Gas Station on River Road has drivers slowing down because a gallon of unleaded is being sold for $4.11, at least 10 cents cheaper than its competitors next door.
"I usually go to either one of these two, but I saw $4.11 and I just kind of turned off really fast," driver Sophie Mondale said.
But drivers using a credit card, they end up paying an extra 10 cents a gallon. Kissell paid more than she expected. When asked if she knew the price was valid for cash only, she said, "Not exactly."
Bob Blakely didn't expect it either. "No, I didn't realize it was 10 extra cents." What the drivers didn't see was the word "cash" written in small letters above the price. Blakely couldn't even see it from the parking lot.
Mondale said, "That's kind of annoying. Are they allowed to do that?" The sales tactic is not new and dates back years.
The station's clerk pointed out another sign on the lot with the price for people paying with credit cards. He said it may be a gimmick, but it's simply their way of dealing with credit card fees, which are taking a toll on gas stations across the country. The Washingtonian Gas Station pays $511.47, all of which goes to the card company.
One Shell station on Lee Highway is feeling the pinch. 75% of its customers use credit cards and every time the price of gas rises, so does the amount the station pays the credit card companies. "In this location, our credit card fees are almost 3%," manager Fouzia Siddiqui said.
As for the sign some call misleading, the station's clerk admitted it is a little big with the word cash a little small. But in the end, he said when drivers pay with case, everyone is getting a deal.
AAA said gas prices have jumped $1.17 in the past 12 months so even a little bit of savings counts.
