A local teen, a recent high school graduate, is dead and another person arrested after a hit and run Wednesday night in Forest Heights.
Authorities said it happened shortly after 10 p.m. at the intersection of Route 210 and Talbert Drive. Police say 18-year-old Marquan Andrews attempted to cross the street, at a point where crossing is not designated, when he was struck.
Marquan Andrews was a defensive lineman for the Central High Falcons of Prince George's County. Falcons head coach Stan Hall said Andrews' intellect and work ethic would serve him well having just graduated.
But Hall had to tell his football family that Marquan lost his lift in a tragic accident. "I will never wish this on anyone as far as losing a kid. It's like losing one of your own kids."
Authorities said the driver fled, but local business owner Shaun Ahn said customers aided police. "They saw the incident where he hit the kid and stopped, contemplated what to do, whether to stop or run and he did end up running, but there were witnesses who got his make and model."
Police arrested 67-year-old William Tatum and they believe he may have been under the influence of alcohol.
Andrews was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
Coach Hall hopes justice prevails in the case. His focus now is to instill in his players the passion that Andrews had for life on and off the football field. "He won't be forgotten. We will dedicate our season to him next year. Every play, every practice will be dedicated to him."
