Investigators say crews have recovered the bodies of two men who set out on a canoe trip on the Potomac River Sunday afternoon and never came back.
The bodies of 35-year-old Juan C. Lopez and 33-year-old Jose Alexander were pulled from the Potomac on Monday near Newburg.
The friends from Woodbridge set out on a fishing trip, investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong.
"We have two individuals who were out in a canoe, something happened, they went overboard -- but again, we don't want to jump to conclusions," said Sgt. Ken Turner of Maryland Natural Resources Police.
The first body was spotted before 11:30 a.m. by a commercial fishing boat. Hovering overhead, NewsChopper 7 captured pictures of the capsized canoe and crews removing a body from the water near the Aqualand Marina in Newburg.
The second body was recovered at 3 p.m.
Frequent river visitors say that while the Potomac is beautiful, it can also be dangerous.
"There's a lot of people who don't take the river for what it really is and realize that they can get hurt," said Chrystal Fleck, a Caroline County resident. "It puts a damper on the whole day -- looking at the river and realizing that it takes people's lives."
Crews from the Coast Guard, the Charles County's Sheriff'sOffice, and the Maryland Natural Resouces Police searched until 2 a.m. They resumed searching Monday morning.
