According to D.C. Police, a man was duct-taped and stabbed by suspected burglars claiming to be police.
The apparent home invasion by about five suspects in masks and body armor, claiming to be police, occurred early in the morning in the 4700 block of 6th Place in NE.
In an exclusive interview with ABC 7 reporter, Kris Van Cleave, the victim said he woke up to men yelling "police" and pointing a handgun in his face. The thieves then demanded to know where the "safe" was, before stabbing him and fleeing in his car.
"[I] was just woken up by a gun pointed at my head, shooting police," said the victim who didn't want to be identified.
The victim said he was able to untie himself and make it to the bathroom where his injured cousin was left in the bathtub with the water running. The stabbing victim said he does not know why the house was targeted.
Police believe one of the suspects apparently entered through a small basement window and then let the rest of the men inside the home.
"At one time they were counting down: 'I give you five minutes, you need to tell me where the safe is'. That's when they stabbed me," said the victim. The victim said a suspect said "Tell me now or I'm going to kill your cousin first and let you see I'm serious."
The victim said there was no safe in the home. He also said as the intruders ransacked his home, they stole a TV, jewelry, and his BMW SUV.
The ordeal has many neighbors worried. "That is not too good to hear," said Arthur Bryce. "That's horrendous, that's just horrifying," said Norma Broadmax.
"Preliminarily we have not had any evidence to indicate that this is a random event and will continue to be throughout the area," said Linda Brown with Metropolitan Police.
If the invasion was random or not, the victim says he's just happy to be alive. "I was hoping it was the police, because that would be better you know if it was the police ," he said. "I just prayed and hoped they didn't kill me."
Police are still investigating and say they do not believe there is a group of bandits posing as cops and breaking into homes. Instead, they believe the house was targeted by thieves. What the suspects were looking for still remains unclear. The residents say they have no idea why they'd be the target of such a violent break-in.
