Spotsylvania County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Minnesota man who left his two young children alone in a hotel room strewn with empty beer cans while he went to the bar, according to investigators.

John Henry Dziewit, 31, of Red Wing, Minnesota, was charged with two counts of felony child neglect.

Investigators were called to the Heritage Inn just after midnight on July 24 after the owner reported seeing two small children running around the parking lot.

Deputies say the children's room had at least a dozen empty beer cans, and several open cans in the refrigerator.

While looking for Dziewit, a deputy spotted the father's vehicle parked at the Ramada Inn. The father was located at the bar, and was very intoxicated, police said.

When confronted, he refused to speak with deputies and later thought he was still in Minnesota, investigators said.

Investigators said Dziewit told them he had dropped his ex-wife off in Richmond. Deputies said they were unable to make contact with her.

Dziewit is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. The children are in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Court records indicate he was charged with disorderly conduct May 10 in his native Minnesota.
