The Chevy Chase Supermarket wants customers to note that its shopping carts now carry only groceries-- and not germs.
The independent supermarket recently installed a device that puts each shopping cart through a full wash, spraying the cart with a misty peroxide mixture before it reaches the hands of the next shopper. All the store's carts, including those in the shape of plastic
police cars, can fit through the machine. The sanitary solution dries in seconds, and is supposed to leave the cart 99.9 percent
germ-free.
Jason and Kevin Kirsch, who own the Connecticut Avenue store, say it's the first such device in the Washington-area. They say
shoppers -- especially parents with young children -- will welcome the decontaminated carts.
