Some parents in Fairfax County (web|news) are furious about a planned school redistricting after a county circuit judge's decision supported the school board's months-old plan.

The plan would bring hundreds of new students in western Fairfax County to South Lakes High School. This may lead to siblings attending different schools.

The plan pulls from communities where students would have attended Westfield, Oakton, or Chantilly High Schools and send them to South Lakes to even out enrollment: South Lakes is under-enrolled by several hundred while the other schools are over-full.

Many parents are upset because test scores trend lower at South Lakes, which has more students from lower-income families and communities where English is a second language.

Proponents of the plan point out that the other schools are overcrowded, and school Board member Dan Storck said, "Our responsibility as a school board is to make sure all of our kids get the best possible education."

Opponents are now considering filing an appeal or turning to the state for help.
