DULLES GREENWAY, Va. - Virginia State Police say they hope to have the remaining lanes of the Dulles Greenway reopened by 1 p.m. Thursday after an accident closed part of the road during the morning commute.
Around 7:30 a.m., the Loudoun County
(web | news) fire department confirmed that part of the Dulles Greenway was shut down after an accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer. With traffic backed up in the eastbound lanes as a result of the earlier crash, the tractor-trailer was trying to stop when the driver lost control of the vehicle, authorities said.
The tractor-trailer, which was carrying construction waste, jackknifed and then overturned. Officials say the tractor-trailer had to be unloaded of the construction waste before it could be uprighted and removed from the scene.
The incident, which occurred at the Old Ox Road intersection, prompted motorists who use the Dulles Greenway to look for another way Thursday morning.
The trash truck lost part of its load and some diesel fuel, so a hazmat team was also on the scene. The tractor-trailer driver was flown to Washington Medical Center. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
The westbound ramp from Route 606/Ox Road to eastbound Dulles Greenway was also closed as a result of the crash. Two eastbound lanes of the toll road remained opened during the incident.
A pedestrian accident occurred earlier at the Route 267 eastbound toll Plaza around 7 a.m. A motorist had stopped his vehicle and was walking over to the toll booth when he was struck.
The pedestrian was flown to INOVA Fairfax Hospital; there is no information available yet on that victim's condition.
