OXON HILL, Md. - Friday turned out to be a beautiful weather day for those who participated in some of the 4th of July festivities already underway on the National Mall.
The Independence Day celebrations started a day early at Gaylord's National Harbour with patriotic kiddy rides, barbecue, and even commemorative red, white and blue presidential cigars.
"Oh this is a lovely occasion. I have my mom out here," said Jackie Evans, a Forestville resident.
Evans was among the more than 6,000 in attendance for the first annual event. She says this 4th of July will be extra special for her family.
"It means the strength our nation had to go through to get to this point," she said. "We have a black president now and I feel wonderful."
Just a couple of miles away, thousands filled up the west lawn of the U.C. Capitol where last-minute preparations are underway for July 4th events. Meanwhile, Aretha Franklin, the Muppets and Barry Manilow all tested their vocal pipes during a final dress rehearsal.
"It is my birthday and I'm so proud...I still get goose bumps," said Lilly Noube, a Maryland resident.
U.S. Capitol and Park Police also used the dry run to get ready for Saturday's massive crowd. If Friday night's long lines are any indication, arriving early Saturday will be a must.
"I love it. I told my family next year we are all coming back together," said Noube.
Virginia resident Eric Hill says his family and friends would rather avoid possible headaches Saturday so they've decided to hang out Friday night and watch the fireworks on television.
"Seemingly [it's] a lot less of a crowd and it's a little less intense," he said.
