WHEATON, Md. - A Wheaton assault victim has died as a result of his injuries, and Montgomery County
(web | news) police have taken the seventh, and, they believe, final suspect into custody in the fatal attack.
Police discovered 21-year-old Edwin Umana in the 13100 block of Matey Road in Wheaton after a fight between several men was reported in a driveway around 9:24 p.m. Tuesday night. Umana was unconscious and suffering from multiple injuries, including an apparent stab wound to the head.
He was transported to an area hospital, where he died on Wednesday.
According to police, Umana was walking down Matey Road and called out to several women on the front porch of a home. Several men came out of the house and confronted Umana, then chased him to the intersection of Bluhill Road and Dean Road, where police believe the assault took place.
Wednesday night, police arrested a sixth person in connection with the assault. Police arrested 17-year-old Kevin Miranda of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring and charged him on several counts including attempted first-degree murder (a charge to be upgraded to first-degree murder since Umana's death).
A seventh person, 18-year-old Anthony Racedo of Bushey Drive in Silver Spring, was taken into custody for the same charges as Miranda; he is believed to be the last suspect at large in the assault.
Previously, Montgomery County police arrested five other men in connection with the attack, including Christian Salmeron, 20 years old, of Ferrara Drive in Wheaton; Hirbin Bladimir Guerrero, 16 years old, of Schuylkill Road in Rockville; Jose A. Hernandez, 16 years old, of Ferrara Drive in Wheaton; Deshaun Budd-Bey, 18 years old, of Bluhill Road in Wheaton and Jose Vasquez, 21 years old, of Sigsbee Road in Wheaton. Vasquez has been identified as the suspect who stabbed the victim.
All five of these suspects were charged as adults on the same counts as Miranda, and the attempted murder charges leveled against all five will be amended to murder.
All of the suspects who have arrested are believed to be members of a local gang, and police are investigating the crime as possibly gang-related, although Umana is not believed to have connections to any gang.
