(Sports Network) - Record-setting Olympian Michael Phelps broke the world record in winning the final of the 100-meter butterfly Thursday night at the USA Swimming championships.

Phelps finished in a time of 50.22 seconds, topping the old mark of Ian Crocker (50.40), established July 30, 2005 at the world championships in Montreal.

Tyler McGill came in second place, .84 seconds off the pace, and Aaron Peirsol (51.30) came in third.

Phelps, a 14-time gold medalist at the Summer Games, now holds five world records -- the 100m and 200m butterfly events, the 200m and 400m individual medleys, and the 200m freestyle.

There were four other finals on Thursday. Rebecca Soni, the Olympic silver medalist, captured the women's 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:05.34, Dara Torres, 42, the reigning Olympic silver medalist, won the women's 50m freestyle in 24.43 seconds. Nathan Adrian won the men's 50m free in a time of 21.52 seconds, just .03 seconds ahead of Cullen Jones and Garrett Weber-Gale. Elizabeth Beisel won the women's 400m individual medley in 4:36.31.
