(Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes host Toronto FC in Major League Soccer action on Saturday in desperate need of points.
The California club is currently in last place in the Western Conference table, although it is on a two game unbeaten run. A 1-1 draw at Real Salt Lake last week was enough for the 'Quakes to stay within striking distance of the team ahead of them in the playoff race, but the manor in which it happened was heartbreaking.
San Jose (3-8-4) held a 1-0 lead late in the game, but a Chris Leitch own goal in the closing minutes forced the 'Quakes to share the points.
"To concede a goal with an own goal was tough. Tough, tough, tough," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said. "You work so hard for 90 minutes, and then one ball breaks us down and we score an own goal. We're two or three minutes away from winning the game, and we did the same thing [we did] in Dallas."
Toronto (6-6-4) is currently in the middle of the Eastern Conference table, and will be aiming for a positive result to keep pace with the top three. The team is coming off a 3-0 loss to RSL in its last match on June 27.
"Whether it was due to the altitude or whatever, we just couldn't get near them," said TFC coach Chris Cummins. "Guys couldn't get their second wind."
The loss dropped TFC to 10302 away from home this season.
"I don't think it was a lack of effort, we kept trying and trying, and plugged away all the way to the end, but we just didn't have enough legs in us. We didn't create enough chances, or string together enough passes, and on the night, they were a better team than we were," Cummins said.
TFC will be without Sam Cronin because of international duty, while forward O'Brian White is out and defender Nick Garcia is questionable, both with injuries.
San Jose will be without midfielder Ramiro Corrales, while defender Ryan Cochrane is doubtful, midfielder Bobby Convey is questionable, and midfielder Darren Huckerby is probable, all with injuries.
