WASHINGTON - A Georgetown neighborhood is in fear after police say a young woman was sexually assaulted in her bed. Police now want to know if the crime is connected to at least six other assaults in the same area.
Georgetown University senior Christian Pean is concerned for the young women living on his street -- the 3500 block of O -- after a neighbor told police she was sexually assaulted as she slept. The crime report states the man was on top on her when she woke up.
"All that is really scary," he said.
The school's Web site showed no public safety alerts at this time, even though the alleged attack occurred just before 4 a.m just two blocks down from the university's main gates last Friday.
"I haven't received any notification about it," said Allison Nowotarski, a student.
According to the report for first degree sexual abuse and burglary, the woman told detectives she did not know her attacker. Sources say there did not appear to be any signs of forced entry into the home so police are urging residents to lock their doors.
"I guess that's really all you can do to protect yourself when you are asleep at night," said Alison Bitterly, a student.
Adding to that concern is the fact that over the last several months, police say there have been at least six other attacks near or on campus. In each case, detectives say a man broke into the students' homes nd inappropriately touched the women as they slept.
Police say they are analyzing evidence from all of the cases to determine if the same sexual predator is responsible. If so, they say he's become more violent.
"Now that it actually is more of a threat we should be paying a lot more attention to it," said Anne Musica, a student.
"I hope they catch this person because it has been going on for too long," added Bitterly.
When asked why a campus safety alert wasn't sent out to students, a spokesperson at the university said campus police hadn't been notified about the case.
