(Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes rallied from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw against D.C. United at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

Christian Gomez tallied two goals in the opening 20 minutes for United, but Ryan Johnson scored before the break to cut the deficit in half, while Cornell Glen's penalty kick in the 62nd minute allowed the hosts to grab a share of the points.

With the result, United falls to third place in the Eastern Conference, two points back of leaders Columbus and one behind second-placed Chicago.

The Earthquakes remain rooted to the bottom of the Western table, and they have won just once in seven games, but they are now three points back of seventh-placed FC Dallas, and would be pleased just to get out of the basement.

The match couldn't have started any worse for the hosts as they fell behind three minutes into the game.

San Jose's Michael Zaher was whistled for bringing down Luciano Emilio inside the box, and Gomez converted the subsequent spot kick by firing into the bottom right corner.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the 20th minute when Andrew Jacobson's shot deflected off of Zaher and fell right to Gomez inside the box, allowing the midfielder to claim his second goal of the match with goalkeeper Joe Cannon out of position.

However, the hosts pulled a goal back before halftime when Glen flicked a header towards the back post for Johnson to stab home, while three minutes later, Johnson had to be taken off with a shoulder injury.

Bobby Convey missed a great chance right before the break when he fired wide from the penalty spot, but United's Rodney Wallace was called for a handball inside his own area in the 62nd minute, and Glen sent goalkeeper Josh Wicks the wrong way from the spot to level the match.
