Montgomery Co. Asked to Provide Day Laborer Center Data

A group called "Help Save Maryland" is asking Montgomery County to open its books and show how much cash is going to day laborer centers.
The anti-illegal immigrant group is filing a Freedom of Information request, asking the county for a list of all employers who use the center to find workers, and all laborers who use the center to find work.
Group leaders say the public is entitled to the information. Opponents say the method harasses people just trying to do their jobs.
CASA de Maryland runs three day labor centers in Montgomery County.
Chuck Floyd, of "Help Save Maryland", is formally requesting information from the County Executive's office about how much money goes to CASA de Maryland.
County officials say CASA was appropriated $2.3 million for this fiscal year. But county spokesman Patrick Lacefield says officials cannot release the names of employers and laborers because CASA de Maryland is responsible for that data.
CASA, a private, nonprofit group, says FOIA requests don't legally apply to it because it is not a government entity.
"Help Save Maryland" says it will sue the county if it doesn't get the information it requested.
