Frustrated Passengers Vent About Airport Delays
posted 5:01 pm Fri August 10, 2007 - Reagan National Airport
Ask any air traveler and he or she is likely to have an anecdote to back up the statistic: flight delays so far this year are the worst since the government started keeping track 13 years ago.
Travelers at Reagan National Airport were hoping the weather would hold Friday night, preventing a repeat of the delays and cancelations Thursday. The problems left people sleeping in the terminals and demanding to be let off of planes.
On Thursday, WJLA/NewsChannel 8 employee captured amateur video of disgruntled passengers aboard a U.S. Airways flight bound for Charlotte. They had been waiting on the tarmac for hours when one passenger reportedly demanded to be taken back to the gate. She threatened legal action if her demand was not met. After a heated exchange, the pilot taxied back to let unhappy passengers out.
The long delays, mostly caused by bad weather, prompted plenty of cancelations.
The problem lingered into Friday. Some passengers flying United spent three hours in line at the ticket counter.
The FAA recently gave airlines permission to fly around bad weather, instead of waiting on the tarmac. Many passengers hope it will help.
