A new school is getting ready to open its doors in Montgomery County, offering students a unique place to study and work.

The new Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School in Takoma Park opens in a couple weeks. The school, part of the Washington Catholic Archdiocese, offers classes four days a week. Students will spend the fifth day working for a business. The students' pay will cover most of their tuition.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?The format has been successful in other area, focusing on getting bright students from low-income areas into colleges, and making sure they're successful.

"I want to be a baseball player when I grow up," says student Julio Hernandez, "but just in case that doesn't work, I can always become a banker, or work in a law office, so, it helps!"

This week, in a temporary Silver Spring location, 129 first-year students are being instructed on how to behave in the workplace, even learning to tie a necktie.

The school offers a rigorous curriculum, and draws students from across the region.

I think that is a great idea. More kids should work as I did when I was young. Get some of that video-game, television, nonsense out of their heads.
