Officials Support New Nuclear Reactor at Calvert Cliffs

Elected officials in Calvert County are throwing their support behind a proposed nuclear reactor at Calvert Cliffs in Lusby.
Wilson Parran, president of the county board of commissioners, says Calvert used to be one of the poorest counties in Maryland before two existing reactors were built there. He says taxes generated by the nuclear plants have driven much of the county's development and increased quality of life.
Baltimore-based Constellation Energy Group filed a partial application last month with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a 1,600-megawatt reactor at the Calvert Cliffs site. It could become the first commercial reactor built in the United States in decades.
The other two reactors at Calvert Cliffs were built in the 1970s.
Some environmental groups are opposing the project. They say it raises concerns about nuclear waste and the increased risk of a terrorist attack.
